Up until this point, the conversation between Clara and Lydia had been minimal. Just the usual “when are we eating” and “I need to relieve myself.” Nothing of importance until now.

Both Kit and Larry argued that at least one of them should accompany her and make sure nothing happened. While Clara appreciated their concerns, she knew how to handle situations like this. She was a Pinkerton after all.

And she was growing tired of chasing after the bad guys, or in this case, girls. Which was why she’d declined several assignments this past year. She needed to regroup.

“As a matter-of-fact that was mild. Chef Winston is an expert when it comes to gingerbread,” Nikki replied pride filling her to the brim. She’d worked hard to secure Miles and she wasn’t about to let him go until he was ready to retire.

“So all he knows is gingerbread? Must be boring for your guests,” Seth jabbed.

“Maybe you need to brush up on your James Beard chefs. You’ll find Chef Winston among the most sought-after chefs who decided a quieter life was more suitable for him,” Nikki informed, her gaze on movement in the dining room.

“Gabby, this is Chef Jermaine. Please give him a tour of the kitchen, pantry and refrigerator. Also order whatever supplies the chief needs while he is here for the Hathaway wedding.

“Chef Jermaine, I’m positive you’ll find the kitchen staff willing to please you and follow your instructions to the tee. Enjoy your stay with us,” Nikki said then turned and went back to her office where she could regroup. She needed to figure out how to handle the unexpected appearance of the ghost of past heartache.

“So, this is what a Harvard education has done to you. I should have fought your mother on it and never allowed you to go. However,” Oscar conceded softly, “there isn’t anything I won’t give her. Even Harvard and its radical ideals. Nevertheless, I agreed to that very expensive degree you are so willingly ready to throw aside. Your mother and I only want you to be happy and prosper, marry for love, and have a family of your own.”

“A degree that you’d hoped to use to your advantage,” Kit grunted. “I studied what you wanted, and what I wanted. Now it’s time for me to go where no one can associate me with ‘The Lion.’ I do have a plan.”

“I imagine you do,” Oscar sneered tightly. “I have no doubt Larry Sanford is part of this plan of yours. You two always seem to be scheming something.”

“Yes, Larry and I have discussed this, and he agreed with me. I plan to take a chance and be part of an opportunity to live my life the way I want. To make a name for myself in architecture.” Kit watched his father nod his head, his mouth stern but curiosity flashing in his eyes. “You may have heard, the Unassigned Lands in the west are being opened to new settlers in April.”

“Yes, I’ve heard the rumors,” Oscar muttered, his mouth twisting into a tight line. “You have it all figured out, do you? Larry Sanford is nothing but an adventurer, and you’d be better off disassociating with him.”

“I witnessed Mr. Sanford and Miss Wakefield in the hotel dining room, with their heads together. They were leaning into each other and whispering!” Lydia said, jamming her gloves into her clutch purse.

“Larry and Clara? Are you sure?” Kit looked away, struggling to hold in the chuckle about to surface. Larry was a grown man, and Clara could always take care of herself, he was positive whatever Lydia was implying was a misconception.

“Don’t be ridiculous, of course, I’m sure!” Lydia stammered. “In proper society that wouldn’t be allowed. Not without an escort for Miss Wakefield anyway.”

“Hmm, given that it was Larry and Clara you saw, I’m sure that it is quite innocent.” Kit averted looking at her accusing gaze and topped off his coffee. “I can’t imagine why they would be sitting that close to one another since they’ve only just met.”

“You mean you’re not going to do anything about it? You’re not going to talk to Mr. Sanford?” Lydia gasped, her hand at her throat in shock.

“Not really enough time to fall in love with the lucky lady,” Kit muttered under his breath, adding a stroke of light blue to the canvas. Unless he finds the only one who had his heart, he’ll have to settle for companionship with someone else. “Falling in love doesn’t happen every day, my friend.”

“Ah, yes. The elusive Wakefield girl you’ve been pining over these years,” Larry whispered over Kit’s shoulder. “You’ll have to forego the hearts and flowers in this matter, Kit. Have you even thought about it? Or are you too busy trying not to be your father you’ve forgotten?”

“Forgotten what? My monetary debt was paid in full last month, which I’m sure my father was a bit surprised to have received the last payment so soon. As for a woman to marry, I’ve spent so much time making sure the business grew, I pushed that one element far away.” Kit twisted the lid of a paint jar tightly. “I didn’t expect my art would take up the time waiting for clients. And since my debt is paid in full, I’m obligated to marry to please my mother.”

“And do you think for one moment your father will wait for you to satisfy that part of the agreement?” Larry chuckled under his breath. “You may be his only son, but you know your father when it comes to business. You, my friend, entered into a business agreement with him.”

The rising sun lit up the darkness outside the windows. Standing at the window, she was mesmerized by the different shades of purple and pink until they somehow blended into orange then yellow. Living in the city, she’d never seen what the sun looked like as it rose in the morning without buildings and factories blocking the view. All she’d ever seen for her entire life were dark buildings and homes that came to life as servants began their daily routines. Until she’d arrived here in these wide-open spaces, she didn’t know such beauty existed.

“Wonder if it smells different here as well,” she thought aloud, remembering the acid odor of the streets being cleaned. The scent of hot metal as the electric railway cars moved through the city. And if the wind blew exactly right, the fish market would mingle with the smell of fresh bread baking in the bakeries. It took experience to weed out the mingled noises and smells each and every day. And that came from living there most of her life. Some part of her missed it while another did not.

Opening the door, she took a deep breath and pushed on the wooden screen door. The fresh scent of grass and hay wafted in the air. The morning dew glistened off the blades of grass. She could definitely stay here forever with mornings like this.

“Because of them, instead of doing my share of work on the range tomorrow, I’ve got to spend the day getting the rooms upstairs ready,” he muttered, walking back to the barn, sloshing water out of the buckets. “I was going to do it eventually, but once I had hired someone. With renewed determination, Cord strolled out of the barn and up to the house after securing the barn door. A soft light glowed warmly in the windows, and his heart stammered. Memories of that fateful night flooded him. This was exactly what he had wanted to avoid. Feeling the pain of losing his wife. Not knowing what would be waiting for him once he opened that door. Wondering if death lay in wait to snatch his daughter as well.

It was the unknown that scared him more than anything.

The space screamed that a man lived there. A man who lived pretty much on his own. Everything was in its place, but Mollie felt that was due to Suzanne and Jessica, not Cord himself.

Near the edge of the round room-size braided rug sat a large wicker basket filled with toys. A rag doll or two, each different from the other. Several painted wooden blocks, which may have been for the younger Kennedy boys rather than for Beth.

Mollie’s curiosity grew when she spotted a round gold frame that had seen better days. Walking closer to the fireplace to get a better look, she realized that behind the glass was a picture of Cord on what could only have been his wedding day. The woman next to him was beautiful and full of life. So much happiness, love, and devotion on both of their faces.

“So, this is what happy once looked like,” she said, swiping away an unexpected tear.

“Then if you have everything you need, I’ve got work to do,” he said, half running from the room before she could answer.

He trotted heavily down the steps, grabbed his hat and jacket, and out the door he went, not missing a step. He all but stormed across the yard to the barn where he saddled his horse and rode out to where he thought his brothers would be working.

He needed to blow off steam.

He needed to feel his horse beneath him.

He needed to feel like he was in control of his life.

He needed to have a few strong words with someone, and his brothers would do just fine.

Spotting Cyrus and Beau in the distance, Cord spurred his mount into a hard gallop. Coming up alongside Beau, Cord reined in his horse and leapt from the saddle, knocking Beau out of his. Both hit the ground hard with Beau landing on his shoulder and Cord quickly straddling him. He pummeled Beau several times before Beau gathered enough of his wits to flip Cord over onto his back. With both arms pinned to the ground above his head, Cord tried to buck his eldest brother from his body.

“What in the devil is wrong with you?” Beau spat, doing his best to keep Cord pinned to the ground until he calmed down enough to release him.

“Nothing a good fight won’t cure,” Cord gasped, feeling his strength begin to wane.

     “In this day and age, why does it not surprise me that so many still follow the old ways and find it necessary to pick husbands and wives for their grown children. Even as a boy, he defied Mr. Dawson,” Clara declared, pouring hot tea into her cup. “However, because this is a case that smells of extortion and fraud, I will take the case and hopefully save Kit, if saving is what he wants.”
