“The Sinclairs
were from old New York, and Mr. Sinclair had been my father’s business
partner for over twenty years. But our families go back much further than those
twenty years. At one time, even though the Sinclairs and the Jermaines were
financially equals, we were what they called new money.”
“Are you
talking back to the time of the Gilded Age?” Nikki asked, astonished those rules
still existed today. “I thought that kind of thinking died out long ago.”
“Yes, well,
there were rules to be followed then as there is now. Rules that I stopped
following after Payton and I split up years ago,” Seth mumbled under his
breath.
“So you are
separated? Or divorced?” Nikki’s heart pounded, waiting for his answer. Was he
truly free after all these years?
And why in the
world should she care or even be interested in his current marital
status, or lack thereof?
