This Christmas
promises may deceive, but love could be the miracle they never expected.
“So, this is what a Harvard education has done to
you. I should have fought your mother on it and never allowed you to go.
However,” Oscar conceded softly, “there isn’t anything I won’t give her. Even
Harvard and its radical ideals. Nevertheless, I agreed to that very expensive
degree you are so willingly ready to throw aside. Your mother and I only want
you to be happy and prosper, marry for love, and have a family of your own.”
“A degree that you’d hoped to use to your
advantage,” Kit grunted. “I studied what you wanted, and what I wanted.
Now it’s time for me to go where no one can associate me with ‘The Lion.’ I do
have a plan.”
“I imagine you do,” Oscar sneered tightly. “I
have no doubt Larry Sanford is part of this plan of yours. You two always seem
to be scheming something.”
“Yes, Larry and I have discussed this, and he
agreed with me. I plan to take a chance and be part of an opportunity to live
my life the way I want. To make a name for myself in architecture.” Kit watched
his father nod his head, his mouth stern but curiosity flashing in his eyes.
“You may have heard, the Unassigned Lands in the west are being opened to new
settlers in April.”
“Yes, I’ve heard the rumors,” Oscar muttered, his
mouth twisting into a tight line. “You have it all figured out, do you? Larry
Sanford is nothing but an adventurer, and you’d be better off disassociating
with him.”
