BookQW = VOICE

NASHVILLE BY MORNING

(a Nashville Duets story)

Some nights change everything. Some mornings change you.

Snowy Firelight had been a hit the evening The Night Ramblers introduced it at the Opry. The single made the top forty on the country charts and was slowly moving up. One problem—James was still being referred to as “the son of Will Sheridan.” That displeased him to no end. Not that he didn’t love his father—because he did—he just wanted to do something in this crazy business on his own merit. He’d have to be patient and wait a while longer. Right now, he had to answer the damn phone.

“Hello.”

“Is this the residence of James Sheridan?” an unfamiliar, telemarketing-type of male voice inquired.

“Yes, it is.” Whatever you’re selling, I’m not buying.

“Is Mr. Sheridan available?”

“As a matter of fact, you’re talkin’ to him.” Come on, just get on with it.

“Oh, hello, Mr. Sheridan. This is Tom Matteson. I’m the campaign manager for Jake Holliday who’s running for a senate seat in your district.”

“What can I do for you?” More campaign fund raising no doubt. Once you contribute, they just keep coming back.

“We’re having a fund raiser on Saturday, May 10, and would like you and your band there to perform. Of course, your time would be donated, but we’re expecting a big turnout, so the exposure would be good for you. Besides, with the name of Sheridan backing us, it would be a benefit for our side, as well.”

“I don’t see any problem, but to make sure, let me check my date book.” James got up from his overstuffed easy chair and walked to the big walnut desk. Opening the top drawer, he pulled out his engagement book. Damn, the date’s open! Should I grab the opportunity or lie and turn it down? He drew in a deep breath knowing lying would get him nowhere. “I was right. That date is open.”

“Does that mean you’ll do it?”
